Forty six years ago, twelve women scientists came together to reach out to society and formed and registered in 1973, the Indian Women Scientists’ Association (IWSA). Through hard work and diligence, today IWSA is a social welfare, non-political, non-profit NGO with over 2,500 members in different parts of the country. It has eleven branches with its headquarters in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Hyderabad Branch is one of the oldest branches and was formed in the year 1979.
The Objectives of IWSA are
-
To take science to the masses.
-
To develop a scientific temper in society by disseminating scientific knowledge through lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and workshops.
-
To promote accomplishments in S&T among women.
-
To understand socio-economic issues of working women, and empower them by providing them knowledge and experience.
I W S A - H Y D E R A B A D
The Hyderabad branch of IWSA came into being in 1979 under the able leadership of Dr. Mahtab Bamji, INSA Emeritus Scientist, Dangoria Charitable Trust. IWSA -Hyderabad has been actively participating in many scientific events and worked in collaboration with a number of scientific organisations in its pursuit of developing scientific temper in the society and taking science to masses.
At present IWSA-H is actively involved in bringing scientific awareness among school children and health and nutrition among college students and women.
IWSA’s membership is open to all women with a background in S&T and associate membership is open for those interested in science and with scientific temper. The members at present include scientists and teachers from various schools, colleges, universities and research organizations.
We invite women from different institutions to be part of this Association and establish a platform for networking and empowerment among women.

The importance of science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development and progress of humankind cannot be emphasized enough. Though women represent the majority of young university graduates, they are still underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science in many respects. Despite advances made in recent years, women still remain less likely to choose a career in science and technology than men. Invisibility of successful women, in particular female scientists, can have long-term consequences. The need of the hour is female role models in science and this conference aims to bring to the fore the many contributions by the women scientists of India.
Conferences are organized by IWSA at its headquarters and branches at regular intervals. The themes of these conferences are contemporary and are geared to encourage women in science and to bring them on a common platform. All-India Triennial Conferences of Women in Science: The first All India Meeting of Women in Science was held in 1975 at Mumbai to celebrate International Women’s Year. Since then, regular triennials are held at its headquarters or at different branches.
The conference is being organized to highlight the accomplishments of women in science, technology and innovation space and to galvanize the community to do more to ensure that women’s participation in innovation is not the exception, but becomes the rule. This event shall serve as a reminder of our collective accountability to advance women in science, technology and innovation for achieving various development goals.
Hyderabad branch has conducted one of the earlier triennial conferences in the year 1984. This year Hyderabad branch is again conducting the XIV Triennial National Conference of IWSA on “Women Led Science, Technology and Innovation” from December 11th to 13th 2019. The venue is at ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad to bring together of eminent scientists, especially women in various areas of science and technology across the country. A number of college and school students are also expected to participate. With this conference we hope to create a platform for all those women interested in science to come together for sustainable and mutual progress.
